The Freshwater Research Centre is Non-Profit Organisation based in Cape Town, South Africa that specialises in aquatic research, conservation, training and education. We bring a diverse range of skills and a collaborative approach to our projects, working towards our collective goal of promoting freshwater systems that thrive for the benefit of people and biodiversity.
MISSION
Achieve effective stewardship of freshwater ecosystems through collaborative and innovative research, development and implementation
VISION
Increased knowledge, capacity and practice to support healthy freshwater ecosystems and resilient water futures in Africa
The wellbeing of people and biodiversity is dependent on access to clean water. However, South Africa is a water-scarce country where freshwater demand is expected to outstrip supply by 2030. The key to unlocking a more sustainable and secure water future is achieving sound rehabilitation, protection and management of our invaluable aquatic ecosystems.
WHAT WE DO
Developing, testing & implementing freshwater monitoring systems, tools and techniques that feed into management
Developing data-driven strategies to mitigate human impacts on our valuable aquatic resources
Investigating and modelling the effects of climate change on aquatic ecosystems to inform future water resources management and policy
Mobilising freshwater biodiversity data to inform decision making: Better data = smarter decisions
