Casper obtained his BSc degree in environmental science from Leiden University in the Netherlands in 2020. After some time as a SCUBA diving professional, Casper decided to play a more active role in the conservation of threatened species. He enrolled at the Conservation Biology Masters course at the University of Cape Town in 2023. His research is based on understanding the environmental predictors of native fish presence and abundance in the Heuningnes River System (HRS). He has found that redfins prefer warm, slightly acidic waters, in more complex habitats where they have cover to hide from predators. Redfins are also being excluded from large tracts of the HRS due to non-native invasive species such as bluegill sunfish and spotted bass. After his dissertation, Casper seeks to come back to South Africa and continue to pursue his passion for conservation and human well-being.
